İdil Biret is Turkey’s most distinguished classical pianist, with a career spanning over six decades. A child prodigy, she was performing Bach preludes by the age of four. By sixteen, she was touring internationally with renowned orchestras such as the London Symphony, Boston Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic, under the direction of Pierre Monteux, Erich Leinsdorf, and Aaron Copland.
Her U.S. debut in Boston’s Symphony Hall on November 22, 1963—just hours after the assassination of President Kennedy—was a poignant performance that remains etched in American cultural memory. The recording was added to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry in 2020.
Biret’s discography includes more than 150 albums across EMI, Decca, and Naxos, covering the complete piano works of Chopin, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff, as well as premier recordings such as Liszt’s transcriptions of all nine Beethoven symphonies. Her interpretations have earned global recognition, including the Grand Prix du Disque Frédéric Chopin in Poland.
She is the only pianist to have performed and recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas, concertos, and Liszt symphony transcriptions as a unified set. Today, millions listen to her recordings each month on streaming platforms, where her reach exceeds that of many globally known classical pianists.
Beyond the concert stage, İdil Biret has been a devoted mentor, teacher, and cultural ambassador, embodying the power of music to bridge cultures and generations.

We are in the presence of one of the greatest virtuosos of our times. I do not see in her generation another pianist who possesses a similar mastery of the keyboard in the service of a mind so mature in thought and so rich of imagination
